Question:
Fat free eggs … I suspect we’re talking about something like egg beaters. -Kevin 307/262/225
– Hide quoted text — Show quoted text – I’ve never heard of a fat free egg! I saw fat free peanut butter and it horrified me, lol. If there is no fat in the peanut butter, what in God’s name is in it?!? I’m considering substituting some of the high fat items I’ve been eating with lower fat alternatives (turkey bacon instead of regular bacon, turkey burgers instead of hamburgers, & fat free eggs instead of whole eggs, etc.). Am I worrying too much or would these changes be worth a try for someone with a family history of heart problems? Thanks! Before you buy. Response:
Heart disease runs in my family too. My grandmother died of a heart attack at age 42. I am 28. I have periodic concerns about eating all the fat. For one, we’ve been told all these years about how bad it is . I truly believe, however, that low carb is the way to go to lose weight. Eating fat is a necessary (and delicious) part of this WOE. What scares me more than the amount of fat I currently eat, is my weight. That, makes it worth it to me to put all my faith in Atkins. Also many people find that the levels of cholesterol and triglycerides go down on the plan. So given this and the weight loss, this way of eating actually lowers our risk of heart disease. Good luck to you. Jeremy

Jeremy, this isn’t directed toward you at all – it’s just that when I read the above, it occurred to me that 500+ years ago, people were told all the time the world was flat. But no one fell off the edge. Myra Please direct e-mail to "myra [at] primenet [dot] com"

It’s a little scary and strange, I know, but eating fats is a key part of this WOE… Read Atkin’s book and dive right in. Give it 2 weeks and you’ll know it’s right. Some doctor’s now are recommending this diet to people with heart/ health problems. I suspect that in 5 years most will.. Good luck to you, ~Bethany
Response:
both the ATKINS book and the PP book go into detail about following a LOW CARB WOE and limiting your fats! — read and post everyday, its a commitment! rosie

Re: High Fat Dear Matt, I’ve been reading and re-reading Atkins and keep coming across the fact that the average American diet consumes a lot more fat than one on LC. In the absence of carbs, it is relatively harmless. It is hard to get accustomed to though and I’m trying to broil & bake more and cut down on the saltier/fattier products – hot dogs and things like that for now. PattyZ

I’ve been on Adkins for the past couple of months with modest success, but one thing is worrying me: The high fat content of this diet. Heart attacks run in my family. I’m considering substituting some of the high fat items I’ve been eating with lower fat alternatives (turkey bacon instead of regular bacon, turkey burgers instead of hamburgers, & fat free eggs instead of whole eggs, etc.). Response:
Yes, you’re worrying too much. Those practicing a good LC diet don;t process fat in the same way a pyramid eater does. We burn the fat. So all those high dietary fat studies simply don;t apply. If you are on a good low carb diet, you get your calories from 2 places basically , protein, and fat .. you need those fat calories not only for energy , but to produce enough ketones for your brain to use.
