Question:

>I am recently diagnosed with PCOS and find that it is to blame for the >weight I have gained in the past eight years (about two hundred pounds)!! >Does anyone know why PCOS causes this kind of weight gain?

I don;t know, but it is true that it can cause such a massive weight gain. I was normal sized and hit puberty with all PCOS symptoms just before my 8th birthday.  i went from a normal sized child to a very tall 400 lb. adult in 20 years. Even on weight loss diets I managed to only stabilize for short periods, and even gained on some. I have been lucky in that my cholesterol is great and my heart is healthy. But, I am really glad to finally be getting treatment.  I may have gotten lucky with good heart health to age 28, but the treatment will ensure I keep it. I have noticed a minimal weight loss (maybe less fluid retention?) but definately eat less since starting Glucophage/Aldactone and lowering carbohydrates.   (Not that I ever binged or anything, just now I can get by with 2 meals and a snack and feel over-full) That was the hardest part.  Knowing that I did not overeat and was exercising but the weight still piling on.  I felt really bad and it was unfair. I know more than a few PCOS patients in my size range who eat normally and get adequate physical activity. Tracy

Not 100% necessarily…I’ve gained a bunch of weight (40-50 lbs. in 3 years) and it’s mostly due to PCOS, but so far all my blood tests have said I’m NOT insulin resistant–though I suspect I am and they’re just not picking it up. (I have all the symptoms they list for insulin resistance.)  I’ve read on this ng about a clamp glucose test, which supposedly is more sensitive than regular insulin tests and frequently indicates IR when blood tests don’t; I just had a blood test last week and am waiting for the results. Response:

I’m not trying to argue with you at all here, but it does sound like you have IR and you sound like you agree with that statement, so wouldn’t you think that the weight gain *does* actually come from the IR?  Just a thought… Sara
