Pet peeve – Imitrex dosage
Question:
Pet peeve part 2 I’m trying to decide whether or not to try Imitrex and I wish that people that use it would tell me whether or not it’s working——John? Just kiddin’ John. (sorta) We’re all doing the best we can. Bob
Bob, yes it does work. If you haven’t tried it, check with your doctor ASAP. For me it is truly a miracle drug. I have used both shots and tablets. The shots work faster, but I prefer the convenience of the tablets. –Steve–

I thought that the tablets only came in 25mg and 50mg doses. I have to take at least two 50mg tablets to get any relief. How does the price of the 100mg tablets compare to the other strengths? Tracy

when did this come out in pill form? The last Iheard it was still just in injection form and my doctor was leery about giving it to me because of family history of heart disease. Connie

Hi, I have just discovered this group and find it very helpful. I have been taking Imitrex for about 8 months now. When I first started taking it, I took 1 25mg tablet every 20 hours or so, now I’m taking 2 25mg tablets every 20 hours. Next time I visit the doctor, I will ask for 50 mg tablets. Has anyone else had to increase their Imitrex dosage over time? Robyn

Has anyone else had to increase their Imitrex dosage over time? Robyn I don’t quite understand that; it sounds like you are taking it regularly as a PREVENTATIVE. You should preferably be on some other drug as a preventative (e.g. a beta-blocker or anti-depressant used for this purpose). You should then take the Imitrex only during/after an attack.
No, I’m not taking it as a preventative. When I detect the onset of a headache, I take 2 25mg. The headaches usually last for 3 days. The Imitrex generally wears off after 20 hours and I start to feel the headache again, so I have to take more. I generally take 6 25 mg pills over the course of a 3 day headache. However, when I first started taking Imitrex, a 25 mg dose had the same effect as the 50 mg dose currently does. Guess my question wasn’t explicit enough. Has anyone else experienced this same need to increase dosage over time? Thanks, Robyn

Now I understand we can now get the 50mg tablet. I asked my doctor about the price difference, and she indicated that the price of the 50 mg tablet is just a little less than that of the 100mg. So if you can get access to the 100mg tablets it would probably be a lot less expensive than taking 2 50mg’s at a time. Good luck
Ellen, Thanks for the info on the cost. I figured that there wouldn’t be a huge difference in the costs of the 50mg and 100mg doses. There isn’t much of a difference between the 25mg and 50mg doses either. I really wish the 100mg doses were available here. My insurance company only pays $500 a year for prescriptions so I spend a sizable portion of my income on imitrex and other migraine meds. Thanks again. Tracy

Hi- In the US, Imitrex comes only in 25 and 50 mg tablets. Jack Sandweiss Research Associate California Medical Clinic for Headache Encino, CA
That figures! I wonder if there are any plans to get the 100mg dose approved by the FDA. Thanks for the info. Tracy

Response:
I asked for 100 mg tablets and found that there is just 25 and 50, like Jack says. I wish there were 100s becuase I would cut them in half and try to make my money go a little further. When I can, I cut my 50s in half and try 25 mg first to see if that will take care of it. Julie (yes I know that the dosage isn’t exact in each half… It just sometimes does the trick for me!)

Hi- Probably not. After the 100 mg was released, studies showed no significant difference between 25, 50, 75 and 100 mg. OF COURSE, individual responses may vary. Jack

You should preferably be on some other drug as a preventative (e.g. a beta-blocker or anti-depressant used for this purpose). You should then take the Imitrex only during/after an attack. I, like so many others, find Imitrex a miracle drug, with the main disadvantage of the tablets being the time to act (for me it is 2 – 4 hours). The injected form is much quicker acting (i.e. within minutes), but quicker to wear-off, and some users experience bad rushes and other temporary side effects. A nasal form will be available soon, with properties mid way between the other forms. Regards, John
