Question:
No FAQ yet; we got diverted by a couple of, er, problems. References to magic diet pills probably won’t go over well for a while…. Welcome to the group, and may the pounds leave and stay away! Pete Brooks
Response:
Hello, I just joined the group yesterday, and I have already gotten many helpful tips and references. This is great because I need all of the help that I can get. Thanks very much! I have been on various diets through out my life and have lost some weight, but I always get tired of it and end up gaining the weight back. I thought that maybe by reading this newsgroup, I would stay "fired up" about the diet. Anyway, I was wondering if there was a FAQ for the group, and how I could get it. Is it on an FTP site, or is it periodically posted to the group? Thanks! You may be hearing form me again soon. Libby

Of course you are not the only person with the pear shaped body! Most women have them… I can fully relate: my waist is slim, and has always been but my thighs and bum are not proportional to it! I wear dresses that are A line which are very flattering. Accentuate the positive! This shape is considered the more healthy for women, so that is a plus! Jacqueline 180/155/140 It’s sad that a family can be torn apart by something as simple as a pack of wild dogs.

I just found this group and decided to subscibe .. hoping to find others in my situation. I’m not overweight, per se … but I am very flabby in the hips and thighs. I’ve gained 10 lbs in that area over the past year. My boyfriend commented on my weight on the 4th of July when we were at the beach and I was in a bathing suit. I’ve just come off a very frustrating weekend. None of my jeans fit me any longer, and I needed to purchase some new ones. I tried 5 different brands and ran into the same problem. (26" waist and 38" hips) Size 6 – fit in the waiste and length – too tight in the butt and thighs. Size 8 – still too tight in the butt and thighs – gaping in the waiste and about 2 inches too long. Size 10 – 4 inches gaping in the waist – fit nicely in the butt and thighs but 4 inches too long … Am I the only person in the world that has this awful Pear shaped body? Its so depressing. And now I’m running into the problem with my exercise routine (walk or bike 4 times a week for an hour at a time) … my thighs are turning to muscle and actually getting bigger …. Hi and welcome to ASD. Count me among the pears. I can totally relate to your jeans-buying dilemma and my big question is: if there are so many female "pears" out there, why the hell don’t they make any jeans that fit us????!! It’s so annoying. I have to wear a size 14 jean right now to comfortably fit my thighs, hips, and butt, but the waist is a good 4" or more too big. And when I weigh less, I go through the same thing you describe with smaller sizes. And when I work out a lot, I also get larger in the legs and arms. I never "tone up" and get smaller — just bigger! I know exactly what you mean. On a bright note for you, if you can squeeze into a size 6, I would have to guess you are probably not very overweight. Just watch what you eat and keep on exercising, and keep an eye out for the brand of jeans that fit *you* perfectly! Katie 183/169/163 — To reply by e-mail, take out all the x’s.

Welcome to ASD. There are lots of others in your situation. I’m not overweight, per se … but I am very flabby in the hips and thighs. I’ve gained 10 lbs in that area over the past year.
Ten pounds won’t be *that* hard to get rid of once you make up your mind to do it. You just have to change your lifestyle enough to compensate for the metabolic (and lifestyle?) changes which have hit you over the past year. You may or may not want a formal "diet" with so little to lose. Exercise is a good start. With so little to lose, it may be enough by itself. Are you planning a food change as well? My boyfriend commented on my weight on the 4th of July when we were at the beach and I was in a bathing suit.

No no no, it’s not an "awful Pear shaped body." It’s a classic hourglass figure. Doesn’t that sound nicer? We actually just finished a thread on jeans for women with small waists. Most of us have ended up falling into The Gap. Their line of "reverse fit" jeans is particularly nice, and the "classic fit" are pretty good too. Note that "classic" isn’t the same as the "regular fit," which are closer to the modern boy-cut style. And now I’m running into the problem with my exercise routine (walk or bike 4 times a week for an hour at a time) … my thighs are turning to muscle and actually getting bigger ….

I have 10 to 15 lbs to loose (or tone up might be the better word) … I know its not much … but it is a struggle with my schedule … I work alot and go to school. (that is where this secretary spread came from) 3 days a week I’m gone from 7 am to 11 pm. My "lifestyle" is high stress … go, go, go … My boyfriend tells me I have 2 speeds – Fast and sleep …. If I sit down on the couch for more than half and hour I’m napping … Fitting exercise into my schedule is difficult … but I have been trying really hard to get 1 hr of bike riding in at least 3 times a week lately. I just need to find a "freebie" diet that will help me find the right foods to eat to help kick start my metabolism again.

Thanks for the advice on the gap … actually, our outlet mall has a Gap outlet. I didn’t stop in there – but maybe I’ll head up this week sometime and try them out. Oh – just an FYI for other Pears out there. I was watching a program on Discovery a couple months ago … it was about the differnt sexes and what different culture find attractive. And, they also went to different african and south american tribes that don’t have much contact with the rest of the world – and showed them silhouette pictures of woman’s body shapes and asked them what they felt was attractive – they chose the hippier women with the hourglass figure – because they were best for child bearing … I made my boyfriend watch that with me – and kept saying … "HA – see, I’m not fat – I’m perfectly made for having kids …" You guys are all wonderful … THANKS IS Manager Delete the -not to reply

Do you eat breakfast? I’m asking because I never did, and my doc thinks that was a big part of my problem. I’m now eating breakfast and spreading my food out in small meals throughout the day. Also, I’m eating a light dinner, fairly early in the evening (I used to eat a regular-sized dinner late at night most of the time). Also, many people on this ng advocate drinking lots of water during the day to help with weight loss. Maybe these types of changes could help you, too. And congrats on the bike riding. That’s a great routine if you can keep it up. – Hide quoted text — Show quoted text –

My mother in law is like this. She is extremely thin and eats like a bird. And she always talks about other family members and how fat or thin they are and how this one’s a vegetarian (she says it like it’s a bad thing) and another needs to watch how much milk she drinks because it’s showing up on her thighs (and the person she’s talking about is smaller than I am). Whenever I’m at their house for dinner (which includes a high proportion of holiday meals) she makes me feel like she’s analyzing everything that goes on my plate: "Oh, look, Katie’s going back for seconds on the mashed potatoes!" "Oh, no, Katie doesn’t want any butter for her bread" etc. It’s quite annoying, I can assure you. On the bright side, her son (my husband) is very supportive of me and of course, I live with him, not her! He obviously has some thing up with him. He’s 5′10", weighs 165 and boasts that he has a 15% body fat … And apparently, if I’m not the same way – then I’m not attractive … His ideal woman is Shenia Twain or Sable … Well – I’m sorry – I don’t have millions of $$ to spend on lipo/implants and surgery … nor do I have and personal trainer, personal stylist, nutritionist, etc – that the big stars have … and I don’t have camera men and makeup artists around to touch up any of my flaws …. I wish that we didn’t have such unrealistic expectations for our bodies. You’re right — lots of models and actresses work out like it’s a full time job. Yeah, we could all look great and toned if we spent 8 hours a day at the gym with a trainer! But the rest of us mere mortals will have to find a way to fit exercise into our lives and eat healthfully and just be content with the silhouette that this leaves us with. No, you’re definitely not the only pear. I have a 30" waist and 42.5" hips, so I have the same problem. Lee makes a jean with side elastic that fits beautifully — gives you enough room in the hips, and the elastic (which is just at the sides, not all the way around) cinches in the waist so you don’t have that gap. – Hide quoted text — Show quoted text – I just found this group and decided to subscibe .. hoping to find others in my situation. I saw on Et (maybe?) a segment last week highlighting Jennifer Lopez’s new slimmed down figure. Seems after all the media blitz, photos in magazines, etc. about how proud she is of her ample hips and butt she’s decided to go Hollywood and reshape them. All done at the gym with a trainer…lunges, ladder climbing, etc. I have to admit she looks fabulous in her new video.
Did it say when she did this? I saw a cover of her just a week or so ago, and she had those womanly hips in it. Of course, the picture could have been taken months ago. — Melissa 140/116/110 Share what you know. Learn what you don’t.

Hi Christian, and welcome to the group. I haven’t taken Xenical, but I do see alot of commercials for it. Some of the things they say about it in the commercial don’t make it sound like something I’d want to try either. "… may experience gas with oily discharge…" If there’s a discharge, it sounds like a bit more than gas. "…may have increased bowel movements, an inability to control them, and an urgent need to have them…" So, it sounds like people on Xenical might need to wear diapers when they are taking it? Liek I said, I haven’t taken it, and I don’t know anyone who has, but just seeing the commercials motivates me to work that much harder on my WOE and exercise plan. I don’t want to ever even consider taking that stuff. Ginny 229/194/150

Hi guy, I use the high protein, low carb. It makes sense to me, and it seems to be working. I was on low fat for years, but kept gaining. Get a book or two and read- from the library if you don’t want to buy. Exercise- start by walking. Do about 3 miles, should take an hour to start. find a nice route, where there are no mean dogs and things to look at, and do it. Pick a good time of day for you, whatever will work. I walk at 5:30AMwith my dog, then shower, and eat on the way to work. You need to find a time for you, when you can do this for yourself. Good luck and keep us informed as to how it’s going. — "HAPPINESS IS A WARM PUPPY!" Bob Burns Mill Hall, PA

At the moment I weigh ~260 pounds. I haven’t been this heavy my entire life; the gain has come on kind of slowly over the past couple of years. Two years ago I weighed about 195. So I guess I’m looking for recommendations as to what diet and exercise plan I should start with. I have no underlying health problems, I’m a 25yr old male, about six foot two. I’d like to get my weight down into the 190-200 range. Also, I’d like opinions on Xenical, what your experiences have been with it, is it worth the cost etc. Thanks, Christian

You are right about this group being a great forum. As you will read, water consumption is very important to any kind of diet/way of eating (WOE) plan. Why don’t you make that one small change first? Just make sure you get 8 glasses of water a day. Make that small change a part of your life *from now on* and you will find that change is good and not something to be feared. Then, you can start to make other changes, small changes that you know you can live with for the rest of your life so that you are not yo-yoing with your weight, which is probably worse than being overweight. Another good way to start is to write down every little morsel of food you eat. By being accountable to yourself, you will start to notice patterns in your eating behavior. My chart had a space for what was going on emotionally, so I could pinpoint the patterns more easily. Good luck, and stick with this group!
