look for the "senior" multivitamins (centrum silver or equivalent); they usually don’t have iron. also, trader joe’s makes one without iron. — mills

My doctor told me the same thing — at least that holds for men. I don’t know about women — never could figure them out!

I don’t know where you are located, I’m in Canada. Mine are called Quest Maximum. Thanks Jazz

A low-carb diet tends to not scrimp on meat. Most people will be getting more than enough iron. And getting *too much* iron isn’t good for you. There’s a whole chapter about it in Protein Power. I take some Natrol vitamins I really like. They’re available at www.netrtion.com. Reb

Most people don’t need iron supplements, and taking them can result in too much iron in your system. Better to get any needed iron from natural sources whenever possible.

Senior vitamins, such as Centrum Silver, are usually the same as non-senior vitamins, except that they have no iron. With the meats one usually eats on Atkins, you shouldn’t need an iron supplement, and excess iron can cause constipation. About 1 in 200 people, especially those of northern European descent, have a genetic predisposition to store too much iron. This is called hemochromatosis, and the excess iron must be removed by removing blood (similar to donating blood) very frequently. Hemochromatosis can also be acquired by excess iron supplements. There are also theories about excess iron increasing cancer risk and risk of heart disease. — "There’s a seeker born every minute."

I didn’t ask for the info, but I’m glad to have it! Thanks, Jamie! — Mdmquincy (Jennifer)

Males don’t have monthly blood flow the way females do.

Ahh, but we pick our noses more. Plenty of blood flow.
Response:
I don’t know particularly why atkins doesn’t want you to take iron, but if your male you probably have too much iron. This increases your likelyhood of cancer, it can also cause constipation and nausea.

I’ve heard that it’s also true for postmenopausal women. For those of us who don’t bleed as much as we should, blood donation is one way to get rid of excess iron.

Exactly. When you have a regular method of getting rid of blood, you also have a regular method of getting rid of excess iron.
A couple of months ago I attempted to sign up as blood donor to get rid of excess iron on a regular basis. However, it turned out I’m permanently excluded from donating blood (at least in Denmark) because I’ve had malaria.
Will it work if I go to my doctor and tell her "Could you please suck my blood?"?
