Question:
Where can you get flax meal in the UK???
I think I’ve seen it in Holland and Barrett, and you could also try independent health food shops. — Lexin www.redrosepress.co.uk www.livejournal.com/~lexin LC since 9 June 2003 (300/242/182)

Saw someone at work having a bowl of oatmeal for breakfast this morning. It made me realize how much I miss the warm filling mushy goodness. Does anyone have a good idea for a substitute "comfort food"?
Faux Hot Cereal: 1/2 c cottage cheese 2 eggs 1/4 c flax meal 2 oz. heavy cream 1 T butter Splenda to taste Blend cottage cheese, eggs, and flaxmeal. In a small saucepan, cook mixture over medium heat, stirring constantly as it increases in volume (several minutes). Add butter, cream and Splenda to taste. This is warm, tasty, filling, and infinitely variable.

A good friend of mine (who has lost 30 lbs. in about 6 months doing LC) gave me this recipe. I haven’t tried it yet actually but she says it’s heavenly. She has it for breakfast 3-4 times a week. 1/3 cup ground almonds 1 packet Splenda 1 t. cinnamon 1 T. flax meal 1 T. melted butter 1 egg Mix all together and microwave on high for 1:20. Sprinkle with more cinnamon and splenda, and another T of melted butter. Add cream to taste. –Tracy in ID

Flaxmeal. It’s esp. nice w/ a quarter of an apple chopped in and some cinnamon, but there are lots of ways to play it. Martha — Begin where you are – but don’t end there.

Add cream to taste. An egg? For something that is supposed to be like oatmeal? Strange, if you ask me. I’d leave off the egg and maybe the butter, too, as the almonds and flax have plenty of fat. In fax, a little more flax might be a good idea. But that’s just me.

Try 1/4c ground flax seed, 1/4c ground almonds, splenda to taste, (2 tbsp wheat germ if you can spare the carbs), add hot water (not boiling) to the right consistancy, a little heavy cream and you have a nice warm filling mushy goodness. I like it better than I ever liked oatmeal.

I take a tablespoon each of flax, sesame and pumpkin seeds, grind them in a little cheapie coffee grinder. Add 4-5 tablespoons of boiling water, some salt and a little splenda. Better flavor than oatmeal, still with that warm comfort-food feel. Chakolate — Yes, we have to divide up our time like that, between our politics and our equations. I’m not sure of the carbs in this but I use equal parts of Red Mill’s Protein Powder (not Proteing Flour) with Flax seed meal and 1/2 that amount of natural bran and some whole flax seed for crunch. Put 1/2 Cup of mixture in bowl and add boiling water and stir. Can add a bit of slice almonds and/or a small tsp butter. Can be eaten with or without milk or cream. I often add some 0 carb carmel syrup.

My mix is: ground almonds ground flax seeds unsweetned coconut vanilla protein powder Splenda cinnamon I make large batches and keep it in the freezer (due to the fresh ground flax seeds can do bad) and then just add boiling water — or add an egg and heat to make a pancake. — Rudy – Remove the Z from my address to respond. 1 or 2 crumbled Wasa Fiber Rye crackers (the lowest carb of the Wasa line) 2 Tbsp small pecan bits or crushed sliced almonds 1 Tbsp flax meal enough boiling water to almost cover it in a bowl, let sit a few minutes. Add sweetener and cinnamon to taste, and a pat of butter. Or try the packaged Flax-o-Meal lowcarb hot cereal line. — "There’s a seeker born every minute."

By the time you’re doing lifetime maintenance (or whatever your maintenance equivalent is) you should be able to have a small bowl of OLD-FASHIONED oatmeal (not instant or quick cooking) with no trouble. To prevent cravings, put peanut butter, butter, or non hydrogenated margarine in it. 1/2 cup of cooked oatmeal has about 11 grams of carbs. The least of any grain except soy.
