Question:

Hi all! I went to my Dr. to have some labs done. I have been on this diet since 10/11/99 and I have ONLY one kidney (which has some scarring to it, but labs have always been within high normal limits). I have seen some posts with concern about the high protein and (hee hee) "exploding kidneys" and wanted to make sure everything was OK with my one-and-only! My Dr. said he doesn’t have a problem AT ALL with this diet and that as long as I drink "a lot" of water the extra protein should NOT be a problem for me. Now if someone has alterations in their kidney function… definitely consult with a Dr.!! Don’t take chances with that!! Dialysis would not be a lot of fun!! But I have one and my Dr. says not problem!! By the way, being overweight is not only a risk for causing type 2 diabetes which can cause kidney damage and failure – but leads to heart disease and a whole other host of problems!! Hubbie is still leveled off in his weight, but blood sugar and blood pressure are great! No more glucotrol! and his blood pressure that normally runs in the high 130’s to 140’s /upper 90’s was 110/80 – WOW!! There goes a couple more risk factors for heart disease!! I really do feel so much better after seeing the Dr.  I also had them check cholesterol and triglycerides and electrolytes (potassium and sodium). I have noticed some muscle twitching, but he didn’t seem concerned about it. I told him I was using potassium salt substitute and he had no comment for that…. He also emphasized exercise exercise exercise with this diet and he said using the weights at the gym was VERY important. I should have asked why…. my guess is building muscle mass increases your continual metabolism, so you are always burning more calories and will loose even faster! Seeing these results is the most encouraging thing of all!!! This NG sure makes it easier! My task now is to find some Thanksgiving recipes (other than the turkey of course!) I AM going to miss cornbread stuffing!! :) Anne Atkins – 10/11/99 160/144/110

I guess the National Enquirer would refer to this as: LOCARB DIET LINKED TO KIDNEY LOSS [-: Congrats on the results!
