Question:
: How do I read my cholesterol test? My cholesterol level is 146. My : triglyceride level is 49.0, HDL is 68.0, VLDL is 9.8 and LDL is 68.2. My : cholesterol/HDL ratio is 2.1. IS this good or bad? Which is the good : cholesterol and which is the bad cholesterol? : Thanks! Those are EXCELLENT results! The numbers to look at are Total Cholesterol, TC/HDL, and triglycerides. Total cholesterol over 200 is considered borderline high, below 200 is OK, below 150 is almost zero chance of heart disease. TC/HDL over 5 is high risk, below 2.5 is low risk. I’m not sure on triglyceride numbers, but I know below 100 is a low number. HDL is the good cholesterol, LDL & VLDL is the bad cholesterol, you need both to live, LDL can oxidize and stick to the arteries, HDL helps to remove the plaque buildups caused by LDL oxidation. If you have a low TC and a good TC/HDL I don’t think you need to worry about the actual LDl levels. -Russell Swan

Sigh. You’re so lucky. I’ve been working for two months now to improve mine. I went in this morning to get the results of my second test and my cholesterol/HDL ratio was WORSE! Pre-diet: cholesterol=160, Tri-g=133, HDL=30, LDL=103, ratio=5.33 7th week: cholesterol=139, Tri-g=108, HDL=24, LDL=93 , ratio=5.79 The lab report says, "the result obtained for the cholesterol/HDL cholesterol ratio for this patient’s sample is associated with the highest coronary heart disease (CHD) risk." Two months ago, it said "high" not "highest," so I’ve gotten worse. I nearly cried. I’ve been trying so heard – eating healthy, exercising, taking niacin, etc, and I’m still going to die of a heart attack. Sigh. You’re so lucky. Mary

HDL is the "good" cholesterol, and yours is fantastic. LDL is the "bad" stuff, and yours is equally fantastic. If you could put your genes (and likely your dietary and exercise habits) in a bottle and sell them, you’d make millions. Looks very good! — Steve Dyer
