Good luck indeed. Heard a doctor in a Detroit clinic on the radio the other day.   She complained about having only 25 spaces per day for "charity" cases.   She was saying "I really hate having to just send people home to die from treatable heart disease when they’d be fine in a week if they had insurance." Yep.  Good luck.

I’m in a real pickle. Can anyone give me a brief synopsis of how Medicare works and how do you qualify?   Thanks in advance! Terra

Response:

Hi Terra, It depends on a few factors.  If I remember correctly you are only in your 30’s, so you are not of retirement age.  Are you on SSDI?  If so, you should qualify for Medicare after 2 years on disability.  If not on disability, you would not qualify until you retire at age 65 (it is soon changing to 67, if it hasn’t already).  You can also get info on the government website: http://www.ssa.gov/pubs/10029.html#part3e As to how it works, it is like alot of insurance companies.  You have a small deductible to meet and then it is 80/20 after that.  Not all doctors take Medicare so that would be important to ask.  I would also imagine that alot of procedures are not covered as well (it is government run).  It doesn’t have a prescription benefit (for meds) either, but I believe I have heard that Avonex has been approved (I may be wrong). Any other questions, just let me know.  If I don’t know I have alot of connections (I was a medical office manager for years!!). Hope this is somewhat helpful. Smiles! Disability.  After two years, which they considered the backpay they sent me one year, they just sent me the Medicare card. I did find out how so many doctors will not take you using that! I was to surprised.  I was trying to get doctors others knew but they cut off a quota of Medicare patients and then won’t take new ones. It does pay 80% of visits but the 20% adds up. Like 20% of my MRI was over $300! But it’s the only insurance I have so it’s better than nothin. Payd nothing on meds so my Tenncare (Medicaid) pays for those. Good luck. Micky Micky
